India's solar energy sector is experiencing rapid growth and innovation, as evidenced by recent developments in the ALMM (Automated List of Model Names for Solar Modules) program. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has been actively updating the ALMM, adding new manufacturers and models to the list, and implementing standardized nomenclature for solar cells. These initiatives aim to enhance transparency, traceability, and quality control in the domestic solar manufacturing value chain.
One notable addition to the ALMM is the inclusion of 12.7GW of solar module capacity from MNRE, bringing the total listed capacity to over 217GW. This significant increase in capacity highlights the country's commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure. Additionally, Fujiyama Power Systems and HR Solar Solution have expanded their manufacturing capabilities, with Fujiyama adding 1,014MW and HR Solar Solution contributing 631MW.
The August update also introduces four new manufacturers with a combined manufacturing capacity of 1,638MW, further diversifying the solar module market. SLR Solar, Veda Solar, Senses14 Power Solution, and Poola Energy have received approvals for domestically manufactured solar modules, with a focus on bifacial n-typeTOPCon glass-to-glass modules.
Several established manufacturers have also increased their ALMM-listed capacities, including SAEL Solar P6, Credence Solar Panels, and RPSGSolvanta. However, Sova Solar's enlisted capacity declined marginally due to revisions in its approved module manufacturing portfolio.
In addition to capacity additions, the MNRE has approved new module models under ALMM List-I, such as Silver Consumer Electricals' bifacial n-typeTOPCon glass-to-transparentbacksheetmodules and Goldi Sun's bifacial n-typeTOPCon glass-to-glass modules. These approvals ensure that the solar modules meet the required technical standards and quality.
A significant development is the MNRE's proposal for a standardized 14-digit alphanumeric nomenclature for solar PV cell models listed under ALMM List-II. This move aims to establish a uniform identification system for domestically manufactured solar cells, addressing the lack of standardization in the current practice. By incorporating key technical information, such as the origin of cell components, the standardized nomenclature will improve product identification, traceability, and distinguishability based on the bill of materials.
The standardized nomenclature proposal is open for comments from stakeholders until August 13, 2026. This collaborative approach ensures that the industry's input is considered in the development of the new nomenclature. Furthermore, the MNRE mandates that all government-backed projects subject to the ALMM source solar modules from ALMM List-I and solar cells from ALMM List-II, which has been expanded to include heterojunction (HJT) solar cell technology.
These developments in the ALMM program demonstrate India's commitment to fostering a robust and transparent solar energy ecosystem. By standardizing nomenclature and expanding the list of approved manufacturers and models, the MNRE is taking proactive steps to support the growth of the renewable energy sector, enhance product quality, and facilitate the implementation of ALMM List-II.
