The Mallard LW is a great wind generator for most weather conditions. It is a great starter system. Our son, who lives off grid, actually changed all of his wind generators over to our Mallard LW after we tested them at his house several years ago when we were first designing them. He was so happy with the results that he asked us to change all his wind generators over to our Mallard LW. He runs four of our Mallard LW, along with solar panels, to power his off grid home. He does now plan to add our new Mallard SP wind generator to further expand his power production system.
We offer our Mallard LW wind generator in two styles. Our original Mallard LW is great for wind speeds up to 60MPH. However, if there is a storm coming in that can produce winds in higher speeds you do need to tie it down or take it out of the air. The original Mallard LW is perfect for areas that do not have extreme high wind speeds. We have had requests for a unit that can stand up to the tropical storm strength winds. Mike has now designed a very simple, easy to use, adjustable high wind protection for our Mallard LW. Our Mallard LW High Wind unit comes with a tilt up design that will allow it to pull up and out of the blunt force of the high winds while continuing to produce electricity. Both of our Mallard LW wind generators will begin producing power and charging batteries at a low 5MPH.
The Mallard LW will start charging with 4 watts at around 5MPH. The power very quickly picks up as the wind speeds increase. Using the methods that wind generators are rated this system produces over 900 watts at 35MPH winds. Amps to batteries at 35MPH is 9.5 amps, at 45MPH it is 11amps. We have included detailed charts at the bottom of this page that show you exactly what power is produced and how much of this power is stored in the batteries. We design our wind generators to continue producing power even in high winds instead of shutting down like so many other units do. This makes the Mallard wind generators a perfect compliment to solar power because they will continue to produce power under cloudy, stormy conditions when the solar production slows down.
Our original Mallard LW
The Mallard LW is built with sturdy construction that allows it to stand up to winds of 60MPH. We have had customers report winds even higher than that but if you are in an area that commonly gets higher winds it is safest to use our Mallard LW High Wind unit. The Mallard LW is for use in areas with wind speeds of 5-60MPH. The construction of the Mallard LW also makes it quiet, which will make your neighbors happy. Mike has designed this 3 aluminum blade system to work in lower wind speeds. These blades have a span of 5 foot. The base of each blade is 9 ". These blades catch lower winds than the narrower carbon fiber blades we used in our earliest wind generators. The Mallard LW contains a powerful magnet to produce great power. 10MPH winds push the blades to start turning. Once this unit is going it will continue to turn in winds as low as 5MPH.
We make our PMAs from remanufactured GM alternators. They each have a very strong neodymium magnet, specially wound stator, new bearings. This PMA is specially made to work with low RPMs which makes it ideal for wind power.
One of the advantages of the aluminum blades that we use on the Mallard LW is that they are much quieter than the carbon fiber blades. This is very useful in areas where you have close neighbors. The aluminum blades make the Mallard LW neighbor friendly.
The Mallard LW is available with a 12 volt stator or a 24 volt stator. If you are using a 12 volt battery system Mike recommends using the Mallard LW with 24 volt stator in lower wind areas. This way, at the lower speeds of 5-10MPH you will still have charging voltage. If you have winds of 15 MPH plus most of the time let us know and we will send it to you with the 12 volt stator for higher amperage but it will take around 12 MPH winds before it will reach charging voltage. You can also use the Mallard LW with 24 volt stator to charge your 24 volt battery bank. It will take around 12 MPH winds to reach charging voltage.
High Wind tilt out option for our Mallard LW wind generator
Our Mallard LW High Wind generator is made with the same blades and PMA as our original Mallard LW. This allows it to also produce power in low wind speeds. The difference in this unit vs the original unit is that Mike has used even heavier steel, heavy bearings and has added a mechanical tilt out mechanism that will tip the unit up at an angle to reduce the force of the winds. This unit is adjustable. If you want it to tilt out in low winds, remove some of the weight. If you want it to tilt out in higher winds, add more weight. It is very easy to adjust. This wind generator is perfect for areas that get frequent seasonal high winds or tropical storms. As with any wind generator, if hurricane force winds are predicted you do want to take the entire unit out of the air to prevent the winds from blowing down the entire unit, including the tower. The extra cost of the high wind, wind generator is directly related to the cost of the heavier steel and bearings.

USE WITH CAUTION! Blades are sharp and can cause injury. Be very careful when working with your wind generator. To help prevent injury install when there is no wind. Never try to stop a moving blade. Instead turn the unit out of the wind or ground the wire to stop it from turning before tying down the blades.
Check local codes and insurance requirements before purchasing items for your off grid power system. Most off grid items are not UL listed. If you need items that are UL listed to satisfy local requirements please contact us so that we can help you to locate the proper items.

Warranty must be purchased before we ship your wind generator
Purchase price of our Mallard LW wind generator includes a 1 year warranty. We have 5 year extended warranties available. If any repairs are needed to your Mallard LW while under warranty simply send it to us, along with warranty card and a note explaining what the problem is and we will repair it and send it back to you at no charge. Warranty does not cover damage from extreme weather such as hurricane or tornado, lightening or damage from something striking the wind generator or the tower falling. Warranty also does not cover if you have taken the PMA apart or modified the wiring.
Original and High Wind Mallard LW
Our charts show you the actual production data. We also include a power curve graph showing wattage produced which is what you will see in the information other companies publish about their brands. We include the wattage graph so that you can use it when comparing to other brands of wind generators. To get the most accurate information, use the amperage and voltage charts. Starts producing charging voltage at 5MPH winds.
If you live in a higher wind area that usually has winds over 10MPH you can request that we use a special lower voltage/higher amperage stator in your Mallard LW wind generator. Here is a very basic chart with the production information that this wind generator.
