When "Ed" contacted us recently with some questions about adding to his system he mentioned the interest that passing boaters have in his wind generators. I asked him if he could send some photos along with some comments that we could use here on our customer comments page. He sent photos along with details of how he came up a solution to putting a wind generator tower on solid rock. Here is his story.

Ed's wind generator

Our Wind gens:  Here is our setup

Located on an Island Top end of Lake Huron Near Michigan/Ont Border.
We are here about 3 & 1/2 months Mid June to mid Sept.  (Florida rest of the year)

Our island is 1 big rock.  Couldn't excavate.  So went to Harbor Freight & purchased 3 of the Truck hoists for $129. ea.  (The tall Ones)
Set 4 Red heads 6" long by 5/8" into the rock & mounted the hoists.
Did a little welding where the jack mounts in order to get a 90 degree post.
Purchased 1 Sch 40 1 1/2" steel pipe 21 feet long.  (Try getting 3 of those into your boat) inserted & bolted to the hoist area.
Removed the winch from the hoist.
Fed 10/3 cab tire SJX down the center.
Mount the wind gens.
Jack up the post & there they fly.  Put guy wires on them (4) 4 each post.
Then ran 1/0 to the power room of cabin to carry load.
I have 3 meters but I don't think they read correctly.

Have withstood an 8 hour 40 to 57 MPH wind & stoodup.  Sure had to turn on every thing to divert the power.

So 3 years of operation.  We usually get a half dozen or more boaters looking at our system.  Half the time they are in awe.  The other half somewhat insulted, they don't believe we run a regular 110 volt 8 cu ft fridge & water pump & have satellite tv.  We do have solar as well because somedays we get a 4 day run of fog & therefore no wind.

We use the gens overnite to keep the power up.  It runs the largescreen TV & waterpump etc.  with 3 gens we do just fine.
With both solar & wind we produce to much electricty.  So next season we are going to add your diversion for a hotwater heater to the system.

I have sent 7 pictures for your website.

Regards

Ed
